These girls are rarely given anaesthetic and frequently suffer long-term damage and pain. Dirie was also the victim at childhood.

She said:  ‘Female genital mutilation targets little girls, baby girls – fragile angels who are helpless, who cannot fight back.

‘It’s a crime against a child, a crime against humanity. It’s abuse. It’s absolutely criminal and we have to stop it.’

This practice is common because of cultural reasons and followers believe that it is needed as proof of a girl’s purity before marriage. According to recent survey about 22,000 girls in Uk are at risk of this procedure, out of which 6,000 girls in London alone. The film, Cut – Some Wounds Never Heal, has been produced by schoolgirls in London and will be available as a free download to all schools in the UK. The film was financed by the Metropolitan Police, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with the backing of the Home Office and the Department for Education. Female genital mutilation is a type of child abuse and people involved in this may face up to 14 years i prison.
