Russian president Dmitry Medvedev and the most powerful man in Russia,Vladimir Putin, have appointed glamorous women as their ‘personal photographers’. However the many have pointed out that this move is aimed at galvanising their appeal among Russian voters. Putin has chosen a former Miss Moscow contestant, Yana Lapikova, who was labelled ‘a sexy brunette’ after pictures of her in lingerie poses were revealed in the media. Medvedev has chosen highly rated Katya Shtukina, a former Kremlin pool photographer with Izvestia newspaper.
Responding to the arguments against such decision the Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said ‘It’s not the sex of photographers but the professionalism that matters for us.’ Whereas Medvedev’s press secretary Natalia Timakova stressed Katya was ‘a superb professional’ adding that to be a personal photographer for the president ‘means not only the highest grade of professionalism, but also good reporter’s qualities’.
In a statement released by Yana Lapikova, she regretted her participation in the 2008 Miss Moscow contest and accept that it was a mistake in her life and she is now paying for that mistake. She stressed that the work of photographer is more important for her.
