Guccio Gucci was born in 1881 in Florence, northern Italy. He was the son of an Italian leather maker. In his late teens, Guccio left to London to avoid the fate of his father, making leather belts and luggage all his life. Who would have known that several decades later he would revolutionize the leather making techniques and products?
The first job Gucci found in London was at the Savoy Hotel. During his 20 years of work experience there he had the chance to work as a dishwasher, waiter, bellhop and many others. During his time as an elevator attendant (which may not seem like a big deal now, but it was then) Guccio had the honor of giving a ride to people such as: Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill and many more famous people. But Guccio not only gave rides to these celebrities, he observed, communicated, made connections.
In 1921 Gucci was let go due to his age, he was 40 at the time and this was considered an inappropriate age for an elevator attendant.
After this turn of events, Gucci decided to invest all his savings in a personal business. He returned to his home, to Florence, where he started developing his father’s business. Aiming for luxury and high quality, Gucci soon started producing and selling luggage under the GG brand. Business started picking up and Gucci and his father began aiming at other markets and conquering them. Horse harnessing was one such market.
After the retirement of Guccio, his 4 sons inherited the company. They brought its designs to new, great heights. The Gucci brand was so successful that it was the 1st to open a shop in Manhattan in 1953.
The years after were rather shaky for the company, and at a certain period of time the Gucci family lost control of the company, but thanks to Tom Ford and FridaGianniniit slowly regained its former glory.
