Jimmy Choo is one of the most famous shoe designers of our time. He was born in Penang, Malaysia in 1961. His hand made women’s shoes have earned him a reputation of a master shoemaker and have earned him thousands, even millions of dollars. But he is not only designing and successfully selling shoes but also making clothes. His most recent goal in life is to establish e shoe making institute in Malaysia, where he would pass on his knowledge and inspire many new designers.
Jimmy Choo was born in a family of shoemakers. He made his first shoe when he was only 11 years old. He graduated from the Cordwainers’ Technical College in London in 1983. He worked hard to educate himself, part time in restaurants and a shoe factory even. In 1986 Choo decided to start his own business, it was the start of his road to fame. In 1988 he succeeded big time in gaining popularity by stealing 8 pages from Vogue, it was a record. Some 8 years lated he founded Jimmy Choo Ltd. Along with Tamara Mellon from “British Vogue”.
Throughout his journey from a small shoemakers workshop to a luxurious brand with huge income Jimmy Choo has earned a lot of awards. In 2000 he was bestowed the Malaysian title of “Dato” by the sultan of Pahang for his achievements. In 2002 he earned a similar award, recognition for his services to the UK shoe industry; he was awarded by Queen Elizabeth II herself. Another title of “Dato” was awarded to him by the governor of Penang, his own state in 2004. Another title that he was awarded with is “Professor” in the University of the Arts in London.
Jimmy Choo not only produces shoes, but has also branched into accessories and hand bags. The late princess Diana was a big fan of the Jimmy Choo designs. Choo himself has said that he has long lost the number of shoes he made for her.
