Vera Wang is of Chinese origin, she was born in 1949, on the 27th of June to be exact. Her couture is centered mainly on bridesmaid and wedding gowns. Due to her figure skating times she also designs for figure skaters, competitions and exhibitions. She was born and raised in New York and currently works and lives there.
Her parents are from Shanghai, China. They decided to come to the US in the middle of the 1940’s with their two children-Vera and her younger brother Kenneth. Vera’s father had a medicine company and her mother was a translator for the United Nations at the time. After graduating from The Chapin School in 1967, Wang went to study abroad. Paris was her choice and University of Paris the chosen giver of future knowledge. The young Vera furthered her education by later obtaining a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College.
Vera Wang first began ice skating when she was 6 years old. Up to this day the famous designer enjoys it and says: “Skating is multidimensional”. Though she was a promising skater Vera did not manage to get into the US Olympics team and soon after decided to give fashion designing a try.
Some time after receiving her education, Wang was a senior fashion editor for ‘Vogue’. But after being declined the editor-in-chief position she decided to fire herself and joined Ralph Lauren for two years as a design director. She managed to open her first boutique in 1990 in the Carlyle Hotel in New York. Nowadays Wangs designs are majorly popular, being referenced to both in magazines, tv shows and movies.
The Vera Wang empire now produces not only bridal gowns but also perfumes, jewelry, eyewear, shoes and even houseware.
Vera Wang is currently married to Arthur Becker and they live in Manhattan with their two daughters: Cecilia and Josephine.
