Fashion designer Vivienne Tam

Vivienne Tam

Vivienne Tam is a Chinese designer born in Canton on the 7thof December, 1962. Her family moved to Hong Kong when she was 2 years old. When she grew older she started studying in Hong Kong’s Polytechnic Fashion School, which gave her the knowledge of fashion that she later used to establish her career. She also got to study in London for a rather short period of time, enough however to give her precious tips and know-how.
After her graduation Vivienne moved to The Big Apple-New York, to pursue her dream of becoming a top fashion designer. New York charged the young designer with energy and the will to work hard for the completion of her goals. Up to this day, the city inspires the Chinese designer with more and more clothing ideas. Tam moved to New York in 1981, a year later she had already established her very own label. Soon, a first collection followed. Vivienne named it ‘East Wind Code’. One more year and Tam had launched her collection on 6th runway, making her a rather promising designer. And indeed, she was. Nowadays she has boutiques in New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Kobe in Japan.
In 1997 Vivienne Tam once again took the spotlight with the launching of her Buddha collection. Some 3 years after she even published a book, named “China Chic”, which is a chronicle of Chinese culture, art and clothing through the years.
China has always been a huge part of Tams designs. Combining the east and the west has always been a main characteristic of her work. In spring 2000 for example, she introduced the dragon to fashion because according to the Chinese calendar it was ‘the year of the dragon’. Chinese dragons, big city skylines and much more have been an immense inspiration to Tam over the past years, nowadays, and surely it will stay this way in future.
